"PRIORITISING YOUR OWN HEALTH MAY NOT BE THE FIRST THING YOU THINK ABOUT BUT IF YOU DON’T LOOK AFTER YOURSELF HOW ARE YOU GOING TO BE ABLE TO BE THERE FOR OTHERS OR PERFORM AT YOUR BEST."

MY STORY

I was born 17 February 1989 as a twin. My start to life was a little more challenging than I am sure any parent would have liked; my little body unfortunately was born with too much fluid in the lungs resulting in chest drain tubes and challenging ups and downs in hospital for a month.

When I began to communicate it was discovered that I had a hearing impairment. Certain high-pitched sounds and vocal pitches are damaged, I now have my own unique accent that causes many to ask where I am from as they cannot place it. I finally came to acceptance of wearing hearing aids in 2017, as it took a long time for me to embrace that part of myself.

I was an avid horse rider from the age of four and had an incredible riding career, huge thanks to my mom. When I reached my teenage years, commonly where the big growth spurt happens, I got chronic back spasms, causing me trouble in my horse riding, discomfort to bed forward and pick things up off the floor and even lying in bed sleeping, I was in pain. So, I began Pilates, and it was my instructor that suggested I studied Pilates, I found that Pilates was a great introduction, it got my back out of spasm, but it hit a limitation for me, I was still in pain. Like most of us living in pain, I ended up adapting my lifestyle to avoid the triggers, but this becomes a limitation on your life.

A client introduced me to a book called; Pain Free by Pete Egsocue who developed an exercise technique called the Egoscue Method. This was a big turning point for me as it gave me tools to manage my pain, it was the first time I knew what pain free could be like, provided I frequently did the exercise menu frequently. Our bodies do need exercise and consistent movement, muscles don’t work unless we use them, but I found that my body was needing more so I moved into NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT)

With NKT I have been able to address deeper dysfunctions, that have become stuck on a neurological level. I discovered that the exercises stimulate the muscles to move the bones, but NKT was able to stimulate the nerves that controlled the muscles and NKT can correct dysfunction caused by scarring, whether operational or injury related.

The work I do has healed and improved my body and it is never ending, but I have gone from a teenager with chronic pain, inflexible and gut trouble to a healthy adult with flexibility and able to say that I am completely pain free in my everyday living. There is always more that can be worked on and that is part of the journey but with perseverance and discovering the techniques that are right for you healing is possible.

Currently I am working on my own tailored Egoscue Method menu, giving my body the corrective exercise techniques that it needs. I am also incorporating NKT Manual muscle testing to correct my movement dysfunction and muscle imbalances. All this Neuromuscular re-education helps to increase my window of tolerance and capacity to do more. I am also furthering my studies in functional anatomy, and as a movement specialist opening doors into new avenues of workshops in postural analysis and pain management that can help prevent injuries as well as public speaking events.
